5 Things To Book Before You Hit The Wollongong Coast

Wollongong Activities to Book ahead of Time

Okay so you have have booked the perfect Wollongong coastal holiday, organised time off work with a rough plan of relaxing and getting away. The temptation is to leave the rest to chance and make it up when you get here.  That is a perfectly good plan if you intend on laying on the beach and not much else but in my experience relaxing often entails eating out at a great restaurant, getting a massage or a facial or doing something new and unique. Below is my list of ideas that should be booked to get the best from the Wollongong coast;

  1. Massage
A good masseuse or beautician is as rare as hens teeth and when us locals find someone good we get in early and book our dates in. For a fantastic peaceful and relaxing massage look no further than Touch of Thai in Thirroul the setting is tranquil and the service is bliss.  If you have months of stress in your back and shoulders and need a good remedial pounding then BaiMed is your go to.
  2. Facials
If you are well prepared then you may be able to nab a session at the ibah Austinmer spa it is booked 3 months in advance but if you miss a spot there you might be able to book into their Thirroul Spa.  In Woonona Face It has a great reputation for high quality facials and you can’t go past the Novetel’s Spa in Wollongong it is ideal if you want to go for cheeky drink post facial.
  3. Entertainment
Wollongong has the fantastic Ipac theatre which hosts both regional and travelling shows – be sure to book ahead as the theatre has a strong subscription and local following.  Good live music can be found at the Heritage Hotel in Bulli, Anita’s Theatre in Thirroul or the Towradgi Beach Hotel.
  4. Restaurants
Most restaurants in the area can handle walk-in diners however there are few special ones where you will want to reserve a table.  Use the power of the internet restaurant reviews to narrow down your favourite and book in for a great table at a reasonable hour. Wollongong Best Restaurants – Trip Advisor. 18 Eateries to Try in Wollongong. Dining in Thirroul.  Our current favourites are Lupa, Babyface, The North Beach Pavilion in Wollongong. Honest Don’s, Bread and Espresso, The Postman’s Quarters in Thirroul. All and Sundry in Woonona and Frank n Beans, and Table 426 in Corrimal.
  5. Something Quirky
For something a little off beat you could book in a Skydive, Hang gliding, Motorbike tour, Illawarra Fly, a mad spin class at Blue Athletic , mediation class at Nan Tien Temple, surf lesson, Sunset cinema at the Botanic gardens, a stroll through the Wombarra sculpture gardens and the list goes on.

Where to Eat: Babyface Kitchen Wollongong

babyface kitchen wollongong

Where: Just opposite the mammoth new shopping centre on Kiera Street (Wollongong) Babyface is quietly tucked between Kathmandu and a Chinese restaurant –  this little gem is easy to miss.

What: Once you step through its timber framed frontage, it is evocative of a warehouse style conversion with exposed framework, high ceilings, raw brick walls and a funky collection of art

Who: The space is set up to suit both intimate dinners or for larger groups of family and friends to gather for good food, interesting drinks and a relaxed atmosphere

Why: The food is interesting and varied offering modern Japanese Fusion in a tapas style with plates designed to share. Each plate is a little work of art that creates a talking point about the combination of ingredients and presentation

How: Foodies might want to pour over the menu and put together their own experience or the chef kindly offers to feed you for a fixed price so that surprise and delight become part of the meal

What I would say to my friends: This place has a fantastic atmosphere and the service was exceptional – our hostess was perfection. She knew her stuff was friendly and funny and always scanning the room to see who needed something.  The food was really good – fresh, tasty and very well put together.
